The trilogy between heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier will go down as one of the most important fights in the history of the division and that ultimately helped UFC 252 become to the fourth highest selling pay-per-view for the company in 2020.
According to a report from the Sports Business Journal, UFC 252 sold approximately 500,000 pay-per-views worldwide. The U.S. market alone typically counts for around 80 percent of those sales, which means UFC 252 sold around 400,000 buys on ESPN+.
Overall that would put UFC 252 at No. 4 for the year behind UFC 246 (the return of Conor McGregor), UFC 249 (the first card back after the start of the coronavirus pandemic) and UFC 251 (the first event on Fight Island).
UFC 252 also featured rising star Sean O’Malley in the co-main event, although his night ended in a dramatic thud as he fell to Marlon “Chito” Vera in the opening round after suffering a leg injury following one of the early exchanges between the bantamweights.
The first fight between Miocic and Cormier in 2018 reportedly sold around 380,000 buys but there was no accurate reporting for the rematch in 2019. UFC 252 selling around 400,000 buys in the U.S. would ultimately stand in line with the first fight between Miocic and Cormier.
Miocic ultimately ended his three fight series with Cormier by winning a unanimous decision.
The UFC 252 prelims ended the night at No. 1 on cable with 831,000 viewers over the three-hour broadcast.
The next major pay-per-view card for the promotion will take place on Sept. 26 with UFC 253 where middleweight champion Israel Adesanya faces Paulo Costa in the main event with a new light heavyweight champion also being crowned that night as Dominick Reyes takes on Jan Blachowicz.
